Ghanaian international and former Arsenal midfielder, Thomas Partey, has been formally charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault by the Metropolitan Police. According to the police, the alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022 and involve three separate women. Two of the rape charges relate to one woman, three to another, and the single sexual assault charge pertains to a third.

Mr. Partey’s contract with Arsenal Football Club was terminated on Monday, ending a four-year tenure with the North London side. The club has yet to issue an official statement in response to the development.

In a statement released by Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, the police emphasised that their primary focus is on supporting the complainants. “Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward. We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team,” he said. The Metropolitan Police has opened a channel for confidential correspondence related to the investigation via the email address CIT@met.police.uk.

Mr. Partey is scheduled to appear before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 5 August. Under UK law, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Legal observers will be closely monitoring the proceedings, which may involve complex issues of consent, corroboration, and the handling of historical allegations in criminal trials.

AS this is a developing story, 233Legal will provide updates as this case proceeds through the judicial process. Readers are reminded that Mr. Partey is to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
