In a deliberate effort to contribute to cultivating intellectual rigour and reflective thought at the very beginning of legal training, 233Legal is launching a Freshers’ Essay Competition that is opened exclusively to first-year (Level 100) law students in Ghana.
This initiative forms part of 233Legal’s broader commitment to contribute to nurturing critical thinking and excellence within the country’s growing legal community. Rather than merely testing writing ability, the competition seeks to invite law students, who are only months into their legal education, to confront a foundational question that lies at the heart of the discipline itself.
Participants are required to write on the theme: “Law as a Tool for Justice or Power? A First-Year’s Reflection on the Purpose of Legal Education.” The topic encourages entrants to move beyond rote learning and textbook exposition and, instead, engage in thoughtful analysis of the law’s deeper purpose: Is the law primarily an instrument of justice or does it function as a mechanism of power? And what, in that context, is the responsibility of a law student embarking on the study of the Ghanaian legal system?
Each participant in the competition is permitted to submit only one essay. Joint or group submissions are not allowed. An essay must range between 1,200 and 1,500 words, excluding footnotes and references, and must adhere to specified formatting requirements: Times New Roman, font size 12, 1.5 line spacing, justified alignment, and one-inch margins. Referencing should follow OSCOLA (preferred) or any other consistent legal citation style.
Submissions are to be made in PDF format with filenames structured as “Full Name–Institution–233Legal Essay Competition,” and sent to essay@233legal.com no later than 31 March 2026. Shortlisted participants will be notified by 15 May 2026. While AI tools may be used for limited proofreading or grammatical assistance, the core ideas and analysis must remain the author’s own. Proper acknowledgment of all sources is mandatory.
Entries will be evaluated by an independent panel comprising legal academics, legal practitioners, and a Justice of the Superior Court. The ultimate winner will receive a laptop and a cash prize of not less than GHS 3,000 with additional consolation prizes awarded for exceptional essays that may not secure the top prize. Shortlisted essays may also be published on the 233Legal platform with full author credit.
In launching the Freshers’ Essay Competition, 233Legal signals a broader vision: that legal education begins not merely with statutes and case law, but with the courage to interrogate the purpose of the law in society. For Ghana’s newest law students, this invitation is both simple and profound—to write boldly, think critically, and begin their legal journey with depth and intention.
