Beyond Practice: A Collective Approach to Giving Back

Two years ago, when HB&O Legal was established, giving back to society was intended to form part of the firm’s culture. That commitment initially found expression through legal clinics offering free legal guidance to persons who might otherwise have difficulty same.
Over time, however, the firm began considering how that commitment could be taken further. The thinking was relatively simple: there is only so much one law firm can achieve on its own, but considerably more might be possible if firms across the legal community were brought together around a common cause.

What followed was an evening of trivia, camaraderie and fundraising

It was from those conversations that the Charity Fundraising Inter-Law Firm Quiz Night was conceived – an initiative intended to bring law firms together, not in competition for clients or cases, but in friendly competition in support of charity.
On 29 July 2026, the idea finally became a reality as HB&O Legal hosted the inaugural edition of the quiz night, bringing together teams from Legal Ink, Zoe, Atta Akyea & Co., Egality Law, Juris Ghana, Nartey Law Firm, Renaissance Law Chambers, Taylor Crabbe and Black Star Legal.

ultimately the significance of the evening may extend well beyond the funds raised

What followed was an evening of trivia, camaraderie and fundraising. The competing teams were tested across subjects ranging from Ghanaian legal history and current affairs to general knowledge. Raffle ticket sales ran alongside the competition as an additional fundraising mechanism, while the support of sponsors and donors helped make the evening possible.
At the end of the competition, Zoe, Atta Akyea & Co. emerged as the inaugural champions.

The prize came with an unusual privilege. Rather than simply taking home a trophy, the winning firm was given the opportunity to nominate the charity or charities that would ultimately benefit from the funds raised during the event.

HB&O Legal will now engage with the winning firm to settle the modalities for selecting the beneficiaries and disbursing the proceeds.

in organizing this event, organizers persisted the necessary support came together.

Yet the significance of the evening may ultimately extend beyond the funds raised. The inaugural edition has already generated interest in making the quiz night an annual feature of the legal calendar, with Zoe, Atta Akyea & Co. expected to join HB&O Legal in co-hosting the next edition.

That development perhaps best captures the idea behind the initiative. Ghana’s law firms will inevitably meet one another on opposite sides of transactions, negotiations and disputes. But the profession also provides room for them to come together around causes that transcend the everyday competition of legal practice.

For an initiative that began with the simple proposition that the collective impact of the legal community could be greater than that of any single firm, the first edition offered an encouraging start.

Ayekoo to HB&O legal!
