The case of a missing flap
August 23, 2024
A resident of Georgia filed a negligence lawsuit against a hospital in Atlanta. The Plaintiff, Fernando Cluster had been involved in an accident resulting in a head injury which required surgery. The surgical procedure involved the evacuation of blood as he was bleeding in his brain.
To access this blood, a flap from the scalp was removed and placed in storage pending phase two of the surgery. It so happened that by the date for phase 2, the hospital could not ascertain the whereabouts of the said flap so had to postpone the surgery whilst arrangements were made to have a synthetic flap manufactured, and subsequently used.
The use of this synthetic flap came with great consequences such as extra incurred costs, prolonged waiting time for surgery and then the complication of a surgical site infection which he had to subsequently deal with.
