President must be afforded some immunity, US Supreme Court

July 1, 2024

The US Supreme Court has ruled that Donald J. Trump (former US President) is immune from prosecution on charges of attempting to overturn the 2020 election.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. delivered the decision of the court, noting that the President must be largely immune from prosecution for official act unless it can be demonstrated that prosecuting the said presidential conduct /act would not undermine the authority and functions of the executive branch.

The decision, along ideological lines, was 6 to 3.

5th July, 2024

The Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, has dismissed Martin Amidu’s petition for the removal of Kissi Agyebeng from the office of the special prosecutor.

The Chief Justice, upon her preliminary investigations, found that the said petition lacked merit.

Recall that, a petition dated April 30, 2024, had been submitted to the President for the impeachment and removal of the Special Prosecutor, lawyer Kissi Agyebeng.

Amidu grounded his petition on procurement breaches, violations of citizens’ rights, abuse of office, among other accusations.

Court Orders Arrest of Senior Military Officer

5th July, 2024

An Accra circuit court has issued an arrest warrant for a senior military officer. The accused, Captain Abel Nartey, is alleged to have collected cash sums amounting to GHC 120,000 to enlist some individuals into the various security services in Ghana.

Nartey, according to the prosecution, has rebuffed previous invitations by the Regional Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service. The prosecution further noted that military police and Army headquarters have not been helpful in releasing the accused.
