The Attorney General has requested additional time to complete disclosures in an ongoing high-profile criminal case, citing the absence of a key investigator as the primary cause of delay.
At a hearing at the criminal court, Accra on 26th May 2025, the Attorney General (AG) informed the court that the state was unable to meet the stipulated deadline for disclosures because one of their key investigators was out of the jurisdiction and therefore unable to sign the witness statements. The AG emphasized that this delay was neither deliberate nor intentional and respectfully requested a brief adjournment.
Still on the self-same matter, the prosecution acknowledged an oversight regarding the third accused person’s bail status. While applying for bail, the prosecution failed to inform the court that unlike the first and second accused, the third accused was not initially on court bail. This fact was brought to the court’s attention during the hearing.
The court, having considered submissions from the Deputy Attorney General and defense counsel Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea, clarified that the third accused was admitted to court bail on 13th May 2025, under the same terms as those applying to 2nd accused.
The Attorney General was ordered to file all necessary disclosures no later than 2nd June 2025. The matter was adjourned to 11th June 2025 at 10:00 AM for a case management conference.
Additionally, the court directed that the accused persons may only engage in any plea bargaining discussions after the disclosure has been served.
The court then adjourned proceedings to the next scheduled date.
