Prominent businessman Ibrahim Mahama and Engineers & Planners (E&P), have filed a defamation suit at the High Court in Accra against policy analyst Bright Simons, Vice President of IMANI Ghana. The suit arises from an article published on Mr Simons’ personal website on April 19, 2025, and subsequently shared on social media, which the plaintiffs claim contains false and malicious allegations concerning their involvement in Ghana’s mining sector.
In the article titled “Ghana Provides a Lesson in How Not to Nationalise a Gold Mine,” Mr Simons allegedly insinuated that Mr Mahama and E&P were complicit in the government’s failure to renew the mining lease for Gold Fields’ Damang Mine. The plaintiffs argue that the publication suggested they used political connections to undermine the lease process and gain unfair business advantage. The article, which has since gone viral with over 93,000 views, is said to have severely damaged the plaintiffs’ reputations, business relationships, and creditworthiness.
Ibrahim Mahama and E&P are seeking redress for the reputational harm caused and have requested that the court impose damages, a retraction, and a public apology.
