Jubilee House, Accra: The President of the Republic, H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, has this afternoon sworn into office some members of the legal community- comprising fifteen (15) serving Judges of the Circuit Court bench and (6) private legal practitioners- as Justices of the High Court.
This follows their selection and subsequent consideration by the Judicial Council and President in line with Article 144 (3) Constitution, 1992.
This appointment of the Justices brings the total number of High Court Justices to about 136. It is expected that their appointment will significantly reduce the volume of pending cases at the High Court and expeditiously deal with matters before the Courts, thereby enhancing justice delivery, especially in the recently created regions.
The High Court, the court with vast and varied jurisdiction, has original jurisdiction in all civil and criminal matters and a special jurisdiction in the enforcement of fundamental human rights under Article 33 of the constitution.
The High Court, also has or exercises appellate and supervisory jurisdiction and other jurisdiction as may be conferred on it by the Constitution or any other law such as the hearing and determination of Parliamentary elections petitions.
