
Judge rules on the market dominance of Google

A federal judge in the United States has determined that Google-the search engine company-maintain practices to keep a monopoly on online search.
The Judge, Amit Mehta ruled that Google capitalised on its market dominance to restrict and weed out competition noting that “Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly.”
Meanwhile Google plans to appeal the judgment.
Court orders bank to pay N1.08Billion

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has ordered Ecobank Nigeria Limited to pay the sum of N1,086,589.11 billion to 1,742 ex-workers of Oceanic Bank. The plaintiffs-ex-workers of the defunct bank which merged with Ecobank in 2012-in their suit prayed the court to direct the bank to pay the N1,146,470,393.62 being the sum of savings in the staff investment Trust Fund (SSITF) scheme.
Agreeing with the plaintiffs the court held that, upon the consummation of the merger, Ecobank had fully acquired all the assets and liabilities of Oceanic Bank and could not repudiate or push out some of the liabilities.
The Republic appeals in the Ato Forson case

The Attorney-General’s Office, acting through the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), filed an appeal at the Supreme Court against the Judgment of the Court of Appeal in the R v Ato Forson and 2 others.
The Judgment of the Court of Appeal on 30th July 2024 acquitting and discharging 1st accused and 3rd accused naturally triggered the appeal.
Among other grounds, the appeals complains that, the Court of Appeal misdirected it self on fundamental principles relating to submission of no case.
UBER AND KAMALA HARRIS

Tony West Uber’s chief legal officer and Kamala Harris’s brother-in-law has assumed an advisory role in her presidential campaign.
Mr. West, a former Justice Departement official is married to Kamala’s sister, Maya.
After the presidential election concludes, Mr West intend returning to his post.
