As the legal year draws to a close, the months of August and September and for the procrastinators among us, the early part of October afford members of the legal profession a brief but welcome reprieve. For judges and advocates, it is that rare season when one exchanges the solemnity of courtrooms for the serenity of coastlines, the grind of reading cases and drafting processes for the pleasures of diversion and yes, ditching legal apparels for something more breathable. Our style desk engaged a few well-travelled members of the Bar for their preferred vacation destinations.
Emma: Nairobi, Zanzibar
East Africa offers a perfect balance of adventure, relaxation, and cultural depth. Nairobi, is a city that pleasantly surprises first-time visitors: the city has the energy of a modern African capital, yet within 30 minutes you can be in Nairobi National Park, spotting wildlife such as giraffes and rhinos against the backdrop of skyscrapers. The Giraffe Centre and David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage are must-visits, especially if you love wildlife. For dining, try the rooftop restaurants in Westlands for stunning sunset views over the city.
From Nairobi, it is easy hop into Tanzania, where the landscapes are dramatically different (from the endless plains of the Serengeti to the turquoise waters of Zanzibar). If you visit during the Great Migration, you will witness an unforgettable scene of thousands of wildebeest crossing the Mara River. Zanzibar offers pure coastal bliss: mornings spent swimming with wild dolphins and snorkeling over coral reefs at Mnemba Island, afternoons exploring the narrow alleys of Stone Town, and evenings on powder-soft beaches.
Travel Tips:
In Nairobi, plan your outings to avoid rush-hour traffic. the traffic is legendary.
For safaris, pack neutral-coloured clothing and a good camera.
In Zanzibar, respect the predominantly Muslim culture by dressing modestly in town.
Snorkeling gear is available on most tours, but bringing your own mask ensures comfort.
Don’t rush, part of East Africa’s charm is its slower, more deliberate pace.
Sasha: Mykonos, Greece
One of my favourite vacation spots is Mykonos, Greece. I absolutely loved everything about it. from the picturesque views and whitewashed buildings to the vibrant beach clubs and hidden cafés. There is a perfect mix of relaxation and activity, whether you are exploring the island or soaking up the sun by the sea. There is always something fun to do, even at night.
Travel Tip: Mykonos has no traffic lights, and finding regular taxis can be a sport. So it is important to be extra cautious on the roads especially if you are renting a scooter or ATV. That said, it is a stunning destination that truly feels like a dream. Definitely check out the restaurants by the pier as well.
Konadu: Budapest and Zurich
I recommend Europe. I love Europe for its calmness and softness. I love the people, the food because the food tastes amazing.
First, I suggest Budapest. One of the best things you could in Budapest is to visit their famous thermal spa. The pool is warm 24/7 and is believed to be medicinal.
Another top destination is Zurich. The landscape and water bodies of Zurich are breathtaking. Also the people are very polite. While there, you can visit the Lindt chocolate factory and also go sightseeing in the Swiss Alps. Grindelwald is the place to be. Using a cable car, it takes you right into the heart of the Alps. I should caution you to buckle up for that experience, especially if you are afraid of heights.
Linda A: Marrakech, Morocco
I recommend Marrakech, a place to be charmed. Here are my top experiences:
• Visit the Souks in Medina (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) for a vibrant market adventure. You can explore, window shop, and find hidden gems and trinkets. A local guide can help you navigate the market.
• For art and heritage lovers, the Marrakech Museum and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum are a must.
• Embark on a desert safari with a sunset camel ride, or take a 3-day tour from Marrakech to the Merzouga dunes if you are feeling adventurous.
• Enjoy a hot air balloon ride over the deserts of Morocco for a breathtaking view.
Travel Tips:
• Morocco is a conservative society, so modest clothing is key. Avoid exposing cleavages and backs. Steer clear of clothes with offensive or political slogans.
• Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and shoes as the weather will be warm.
• Keep your sunglasses and sunscreen handy.
• Be mindful of pickpockets. Keep flashiness to a minimum so you are not a target.
• Do not be shy to haggle over prices as haggling is part of the culture.
• Accommodation ranges from comfortable tent-style hotels to luxurious stays depending on your preferred experience.
Lilian: Malta
The beautiful European country of Malta, comprising three islands, offers a captivating blend of sun, sea, and rich history. With its Mediterranean charm and compact size, Malta is perfect for a tranquil yet culturally immersive holiday. From golden beaches to ancient walled cities like Mdina, the islands invite exploration, indulgence, and discovery.

This makes Malta not only a gateway to the maritime world but also an exceptional destination for lawyers and legal scholars with an interest in maritime and international law. Whether you are seeking professional enrichment or simply a well-balanced escape that is neither too crowded nor too quiet, Malta offers a unique and inspiring setting.
C.Kesse: United Kingdom
The United Kingdom remains a timeless recommendation, particularly for those in the legal fraternity. London, at the heart of it all, is steeped in history that resonates deeply with our own legal framework. Beyond the bustling city centre, the suburbs of Croydon, Brixton, Peckham and Birmingham offer a different yet equally vibrant experience, with a transport system that is remarkably efficient, well-marked and user-friendly.
For shopping, London is unrivalled. The grandeur of West End, Oxford Street and Knightsbridge hosts some of the world’s most exclusive brands, making it a perfect destination for fine suits, shoes and bags. The city also offers a promising nightlife, with countless fine dining restaurants and nightclubs that stand out even on the global stage.
Most importantly for lawyers, London is the ideal place to shop for legal apparel. Chancery Lane, home to iconic establishments such as Stanley Ley and Ede & Ravenscroft, continues to uphold its reputation as the oldest and most distinguished source of courtroom attire. For any legal practitioner, a visit here is not only practical but symbolic, connecting today’s profession to centuries of tradition.
